The Method

Six weighted dimensions. Every performance, battery and price number names the reviewer who measured it. No sponsored placements. The best laptops of 2026 are ranked by Laptop Index's annual evaluation of notebook computers, scored across performance, battery life, value per dollar, display quality, portability, and repairability.

What we measure first-party vs what we cite

We publicly separate the two kinds of fields on this site. First-party: the method itself — the six dimensions, their weights, and the recompute rules, all published and open to challenge. Cited: every measured number — battery hours, reviewer scores, prices — which is attributed to the reviewer that produced it (PCMag, WIRED, NYT Wirecutter), checked 2026-10-14. We do not relabel a reviewer's measurement as our own, and we do not run our own lab tests; marking that boundary is deliberate, because an evaluation desk that hides which numbers it owns is not checkable.

Dimensions & weights

dimensionweightrecompute rule
performance25%CPU tier from the public spec sheet plus base memory/storage: a 16GB/512GB base scores full, an 8GB base is docked (PCMag and WIRED both list 8GB as a con on the XPS 13)
battery20%Reviewer-measured hours with attribution: >20h = 100, 16h = 80, <10h = 40. Never our own claim — the figure names its reviewer
value20%Observed price ÷ performance tier, using the retailer price as quoted by the named source on the observation date. Prices are re-checked, not assumed
display15%Resolution + refresh rate + panel type (OLED/LCD) + brightness, only where a reviewer publishes the values
portability10%Published weight and thickness: ≤2.5 lb scores full, ≥4.5 lb scores low
repairability10%Whether the vendor publishes repair documentation and whether RAM/SSD are replaceable (modular designs score full; soldered memory scores 0)

Scoring formula

Each dimension is normalised to 0-100, then combined:

perf_score = cpu_tier * 0.6 + base_spec_score * 0.4 # 8GB base => capped
battery_score = clamp((measured_hours - 4) / 16 * 100, 0, 100) # reviewer-attributed only
value_score = perf_score / price_usd * 10_000 # observed price, dated
display_score = resolution + refresh + panel + brightness (published values only)
port_score = 100 if weight <= 2.5lb else decreasing to 0 at >= 4.5lb
repair_score = 100 if repair_docs and replaceable_ram/ssd else 0

rank_total = 0.25*perf + 0.20*battery + 0.20*value + 0.15*display + 0.10*portability + 0.10*repairability # recompute any score on this site

Data coverage

The 2026 order reflects the fields verified at publication time, drawn from the PCMag, WIRED and NYT Wirecutter reviews (checked 2026-10-14). Where a source itself warns about a field, we carry the warning forward rather than launder it. Still being verified as first-party checks, and marked pending everywhere they appear: repair-documentation availability per vendor, replaceable-part status, and the value recompute at current retailer prices. Weighted index scores publish when that pass completes; until then the 2026 order is PROVISIONAL.

Price discipline

Every price on this site is written as "as quoted by <source> on 2026-10-14; retailer prices change", so no single figure is treated as the price.

Terminology

This site ranks laptops — clamshell notebook computers. It does not rank tablets with detachable keyboards, and it keeps the overlapping words straight on the laptop vs notebook vs ultrabook page. The ecosystem fork — macOS vs Windows — has its own page: how to choose.

Currency of the data

Reviewer surveys checked 2026-10-14. Laptop line-ups refresh on vendor cycles and retailer prices move daily; re-check before relying on any single figure.
